Ukraine plans to resume electricity exports
Starting August 25, Ukraine plans to resume exporting electrical energy to neighboring countries
On August 23, Ukrenergo announced that an auction will be held tomorrow to allocate access to interstate electricity crossings for Romania, Hungary, and Moldova. This move aims to prevent restrictions on Ukrainian electricity producers.
Ukrenergo stated that electricity exports will occur only when there is a surplus of power, particularly during the peak operation of solar power plants. Exports will be suspended during high consumption periods when the power system's capacity is insufficient.
The decision to resume exports is influenced by the current state of the power system. Specifically, cooler weather has reduced electricity consumption since yesterday, and a power unit at a nuclear plant that was under maintenance has been brought back online. This has created a surplus of power during the day, especially when solar power plants are generating electricity at high levels.
“To maintain system stability, energy production must match consumption,” Ukrenergo explained. They noted that there are two ways to address excess power: either by reducing solar power generation or by resuming exports. Given the economic inefficiency of cutting back solar power, Ukrenergo chose to resume exports instead.
