The European Union plans to fully ban imports of Russian gas by 2027 as part of efforts to sever energy ties with Moscow

According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, the EU is expected to propose a ban in June covering all Russian gas imports — both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) — with the goal of implementing it by the end of 2027.

The European Commission is also expected to adopt measures at the same time to phase out the remaining Russian imports under long-term contracts.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, European countries have cut their reliance on Russian gas from over 40% to around 19% of total imports. However, Bloomberg notes that last year the EU still imported $26 billion worth of Russian gas — an amount that exceeded the military aid provided to Ukraine in 2024.
