EU may supply 1 million munitions to Ukraine within a year - Estonian Foreign Minister
The head of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna, said that the EU will be able to fulfill the plan to supply 1 million units of ammunition to Ukraine in 2023
Minister Tsahkna made the statement in Luxembourg at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
"I am confident that the EU will be able to supply this million rounds of ammunition this year, as we have agreed," the Estonian Foreign Minister said.
Tsahkna emphasized that Ukraine "desperately needs it.”
In addition, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that a solution to the EUR 1 billion loan for ammunition for Ukraine would be found in the coming days.
"The first one is already working. We received a request to reimburse (the costs of EU countries for) 600 million euros. I cannot tell you about the ammunition that (was delivered) within the framework of this 600 million euros. But I have already been asked to pay 600 million euros," the EU official said, adding that this is the first track.
In the second track, the EU will allocate EUR 1 billion for the purchase of ammunition. This issue is still under discussion due to disagreements among some of the bloc's countries.
"But I am sure that everyone understands that we are in a situation of extreme urgency, and I am sure that in the coming days, we will reach an agreement. But while we are looking for these arrangements, don't think that we are just sitting and waiting, the work is still going on. When we reach legal agreements, the practical work will be completed," Borrell added.
The third track involves the joint purchase of ammunition.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis hopes that a decision will be made today.
"When it comes to finding a quick solution to the issue of ammunition for Ukraine, it is not only a political commitment that was approved at the last Council, but also a message to Ukraine that we will continue to support Ukraine militarily. We expect that we will be able to find an agreement today," Landsbergis said.
Also, before the EU Council meeting, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the foreign ministers of the EU member states have not yet agreed on the 11th package of sanctions against Russia, and therefore will continue discussing new restrictions.
