EU Council finally approves allocation of EUR 1 bln for ammunition for Ukraine
On Friday, May 5, the EU Council decided to allocate EUR 1 billion for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine under the European Peace Facility
The EU Council's press service reported that as part of the assistance, Ukraine will receive 155 mm artillery shells and, upon request, missiles, which will be jointly purchased by EU member states.
“The Ukrainian Armed Forces need substantial amounts of ammunition to defend the Ukrainian people and territory. They need it fast. Together with the previous decision to swiftly provide ammunition from existing stocks, we are committing €2 billion to this purpose, bringing the total EU military support to Ukraine to €5.6 billion,” EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said.
This measure will facilitate joint procurement of ammunition and missiles from companies based in the EU or Norway, as well as the production of these ammunition and missiles.
The support measures adopted today, together with the previous military assistance package, bring the total EU contribution to Ukraine in support of military supplies under the EPF to EUR 5.6 billion.
