EU Commission recommends giving Ukraine EU candidate status
On June 17, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine EU candidate status
This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"We recommend that Ukraine is given the candidate status, as we realise that the country will carry out a number of important reforms. Ukraine has clearly demonstrated its commitment to living by European values and standards. They started their journey to be a part of the EU even before the war, showing that Ukrainians are ready to die for the European future perspective. We want them to live with us as a European dream."
The European Commission also recommended granting Moldova EU candidate status.
"We also recommend granting Moldova the candidate status, realising that the country will carry out reforms. Moldova is on a real pro-reform, anti-corruption and European path. There is still a long way to go, but we believe the country has the potential to meet the criteria," Ursula von der Leyen added.
Georgia, however, did not receive similar assurances from the European Commission.
"Georgia must unite politically to form a clear path to structural reforms and the EU. Therefore, we recommend giving Georgia a European perspective, but go back and assess how well it meets a number of conditions before granting it candidate status," she said.
Today, the @EU_Commission has adopted its Opinions on the membership applications of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, after assessing them against our rigorous standards ↓
