Peter Stano, the European Commission’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, said this at a briefing on August 8, DW reports.
"We are not a security organization. This is a discussion for NATO and individual countries, but not for the EU as an organization," Stano said.
He noted that the European Union supports Ukraine in several areas, including the military sphere. As for direct security guarantees, "we can support them, but the EU itself is not a security guarantor," Stano said.
"It is the prerogative of the member states that have the means to offer such guarantees," he concluded.
- In late June, Western media reported that the EU was developing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
-
On August 3, it was reported that Ukraine had started negotiations with the US on security guarantees.
