Ukrainian army eliminates 790 Russian troops, 30 artillery systems per day - General Staff

Ukraine's General Staff reports.

The total Russian combat losses from February 24, 2022, to January 5, 2024, amounted to:

• personnel – about 363,070 (+790)
• tanks ‒ 6,011 (+9)
• armored fighting vehicles ‒ 11,142 (+14)
• artillery systems – 8,604 (+30)
• MLRS – 949 (+2)
• air defense systems ‒ 631 (+1) 
• aircraft – 329
• helicopters – 324
• UAV operational-tactical level – 6,771 (+18)
• cruise missiles ‒ 1,786 (+1)
• warships/boats ‒ 23
• submarines – 1
• vehicles and tank trucks – 11,463 (+40) 
• special equipment ‒ 1,313 (+9)

Russia's hostile shelling of Ukraine

Over the past day, 59 combat engagements took place. The Russians launched 7 missile strikes, 36 air strikes, fired 37 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops' positions and populated areas.

About 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire. 2 settlements in Donetsk region; 2 settlements in Zaporizhzhia region; Zmiivka in Kherson region were hit by air strikes.

"As a result of Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are dead and wounded among the civilian population. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have been destroyed and damaged," the General Staff noted. 

In addition, at night, the Russian occupiers once again attacked Ukraine with Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs.

Situation on the main frontlines

Near the state Ukrainian border with Belarus, the operational situation has not changed.

In the northeastern border area, the Russian army maintains a military presence, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.

In the Kupyansk direction, Ukrainian defenders beat back 4 Russian attacks near Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka in the Kharkiv region.

In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 4 attacks near Bohdanivka, Klishchiyivka and Andriivka in Donetsk region.

In the Lyman and Shakhtarsk directions, the Russian troops did not conduct any offensive actions.

In the Avdiivka direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to deter the Russian forces, which continue trying to encircle Avdiivka. Ukrainian defenders are holding the line and inflicting significant losses on the Russian troops. Ukrainian Defense Forces repulsed 16 Russian attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka and another 16 attacks in the areas of Pervomaiske and Nevelske in Donetsk region over the past day.

In the Marinka direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to hold back the Russian troops near Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk region. Ukrainian troops repelled 7 attacks in the Donetsk region.

 In the Zaporizhzhia direction, near Robotyne and northwest of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia region Ukrainian forces beat back 8 Russian attacks.

In the Kherson direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to expand their bridgehead. Despite significant losses, the Russian troops continue trying to drive Ukrainian units out of their positions. Over the past day, the invading Russian army made 6 unsuccessful assault attacks.

Over the past day, Ukrainian aviation struck 10 areas with concentrated personnel and 2 Russian command posts.

Ukrainian missile troops hit an air defense facility, personnel, weapons and military equipment concentration area, 4 artillery pieces, 2 electronic warfare stations and 3 Russian command posts.
