Russia's hostile shelling of Ukraine

Over the past day, the Russian aggressor launched 4 missile strikes, 45 air strikes, fired 71 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops' positions and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Several high-rise buildings and other civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed and damaged.

At night, Russian troops once again attacked Ukraine using 7 Shahed UAVs. The Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 5 attack drones.

Using aircraft, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv, Nevske, and Bilohorivka in Luhansk region; 18 settlements in Donetsk region; Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region; and Vesele in Kherson region.

More than 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions were under artillery fire.

Situation on the main frontlines

The operational situation in the northern Ukrainian border remains without significant changes.

In the northeastern border area, the Russian army maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts subversive activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border.

In the Kupyansk direction, the Russian army did not conduct offensive (assault) actions.

In the Lyman direction, the Russian military attacked Ukrainian positions 17 times in the areas of Serebryanske forestry in Luhansk region and Terny in Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction , Ukrainian soldiers fought off 14 attacks in the areas of Bilohorivka, Luhansk region; Verkhnekamianske, Vyimka, Bohdanivka, Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian troops countered 16 attacks in the areas of Ocheretyne, Berdychi, Umanske, Yasnobrodivka, Netailove and Pervomayske in Donetsk region.

In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back the Russian troops in the vicinity of Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka, Vodiane and Urozhaine in Donetsk region. The Russian forces tried to break through the Ukrainian troops' defenses 23 times.

In the Orikhiv direction, the Russian troops attacked Ukrainian positions 4 times near Staromayorske, Donetsk region, and Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia region.

In the Kherson direction, Russia did not abandon its intention to drive Ukrainian troops from their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro River and launched 4 unsuccessful attacks on Ukrainian troops' positions.

Ukrainian Defense Forces strikes at Russian positions

Ukrainian forces are actively inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the occupying Russian forces, depleting the enemy along the entire front line.

Over the past day, Ukrainian aviation struck 9 areas where Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment were concentrated. Ukrainian air defense forces also destroyed 2 Kh-59 guided missiles.

Missile troops struck 1 area of concentration of personnel and 1 Russian UAV control center.

  • On April 21, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that by May 9, 2024, the Russian army plans to capture Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region. The Russian Federation wants to launch an offensive as early as June.
