Embargo on Russian oil will be adopted
European Union leaders have managed to break Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's resistance and introduce an embargo on Russian oil exports to the EU.
To this end, European leaders had to resort to significant concessions to Orban. Supply of the notorious Russian oil pipeline 'Druzhba' is exempted from the embargo. But it's a serious blow to Putin. Supply by sea is already terminated. Poland and Germany should abandon Russian oil supply through the 'Druzhba' pipeline in several months. Thus, Putin's regime will lose a total of about USD 22 billion of oil revenues annually. Southern branch of 'Druzhba' delivers oil to Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which brings Russia about USD 10 billion. But now the purchase will be reduced.
Orban, who did everything to delay the time and actually help keep Putin's profits, doesn't trust the Kremlin. Hungarian Prime got guarantees from colleagues that if supply through 'Druzhba' stops, the EU will take urgent measures to ensure supply.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explained at a press conference that Hungary's aid in this case would come from the Adriatic oil pipeline, whose capacity could be increased relatively quickly. The same measures may apply to other countries dependent on Russian oil. And distrust of Putin will no doubt help Europeans abandon Russian oil altogether. The Kremlin will not receive these USD 10 billion for a long time.
