Dzhankoy attack calls into question future of Russian subsonic cruise missiles

Military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi believes that the AFU air defense challenged the concept of high-precision strikes, and now the AFU undermined the very future of cruise subsonic missiles — it is a vulnerable type of weaponry

He expressed this opinion on Espreso.

The military expert commented on the temporarily occupied Dzhankoy attack on March 20.

"We have a fascinating paradox where the actual impact of the strike is much greater than what was declared. From a logistical perspective, the effect of the strike on Dzhankoy, despite its seeming specificity, can be called into question. For instance, although the railway line is single-track, the impact occurred near a railway junction, suggesting the presence of junctions, arrows, and related infrastructure. In reality, old-fashioned rails can be sourced and utilized to quickly repair any damage to the railway track. Moreover, since it's a railway junction, equipment for repairing the track is likely to be nearby," explained the expert.

According to Ivan Kyrychevskyi, the significance of the logistics line from Kerch to Dzhankoy for the Russians should not be exaggerated. They are currently prioritizing the main traffic for supplying their troops in the south, and are also using the land corridor.

As a result, they are operating logistics from the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas to Crimea, using an "express" route from Novorossiysk to the temporarily occupied Mariupol, where troops and vehicles are transported by large landing ships. Therefore, the Russians are increasingly relying on Mariupol as a logistics center.

“Regarding the strategic importance of the Ukraine’s  Armed Forces strike on Dzhankoy, it disabled the echelon carrying a significant number of Kalibr missiles, which was a major blow to the Russians. It is suspected that the entire month's batch of about 20 units, which could have been issued by the Russian Defense Ministry, was destroyed. This success disrupted the enemy's possible plans for strikes on Ukraine's infrastructure. Therefore, by conducting this strike on March 20, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have raised questions about the future of Russian cruise missiles as a type of weapon. If this type of weapon is vulnerable, what are its prospects? Thanks to the effectiveness of air defense, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already challenged the enemy's concept of high-precision strikes with cruise subsonic missiles, and now they have undermined the future of cruise subsonic missiles as a vulnerable type of weaponry," noted Kyrychevskyi.
