Institute for Documentation and Interaction opens in Ukraine to study war
New cultural and research institution INDEX opens in the Ukrainian city of Lviv
The Lviv City Council reported this.
World-renowned historian and professor Timothy Snyder, who spearheaded the creation of the institute, and Ukrainian writer, musician, and soldier Serhii Zhadan, attended the opening event on September 7.
According to the report, INDEX is a project of the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. For nearly a decade, IWM has amplified Ukrainian voices worldwide and documented Ukraine’s war experiences through its Ukraine in European Dialogue and Documenting Ukraine programs.
At the opening, the institute’s leaders emphasized the need to move beyond immediate-response projects and focus on documenting today’s reality for future generations.

“The establishment of INDEX — a Ukrainian intellectual and cultural hub — is not just a reaction to the full-scale war, it’s a pledge for long-term cooperation. It will document Russia’s war on Ukraine and foster intellectual exchanges between Ukraine and the global community,” the city council stated.
