Ukrainian athlete Pomazan strikes gold in shot put at 2024 Paralympics
Ukrainian shot putter Maria Pomazan claimed gold in the F35 class competition at the 2024 Paralympic Games

Pomazan led the field with her first throw in the final, launching the shot 12.75 meters.
None of the other athletes could beat Pomazan’s mark, leaving her 81 centimeters ahead of world record holder Wang Jun. Pomazan secured her second consecutive Paralympic gold.
The 2024 Paralympic shot put results (F35 class):
- Maria Pomazan (Ukraine) — 12.75 m
- Wang Jun (China) — 11.94 m
- Anna Nicholson (Great Britain) — 9.44 m
"Emotionally, it’s tough. This medal was probably the hardest for me, because the emotions we’re feeling in Ukraine are beyond words. I’m very happy and want to dedicate this to our defenders. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. It’s for the rescuers, the volunteers, the ones keeping us safe. This medal is for Ukraine," Pomazan told Suspilne Sport.
For 35-year-old Pomazan, the 2024 Games mark her fourth Paralympics. She debuted in London 2012, winning gold in shot put and silver in discus. In Rio 2016, she took shot put silver, and in Tokyo 2020, she triumphed again in shot put.
Ukraine at the Paralympics
Ukrainian Paralympians have secured 13 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze medals. The national team currently holds 7th place in the overall medal standings.
