Chechen prisoners, relatives of opposition activists, deployed to Ukraine - Ukrainian intelligence
The Chechen branch of the FSB is gathering information on local prisoners to deploy them to Ukraine
The Main Directorate of Intelligence at Ukraine’s Defense Ministry shared details of this activity.
Chechen FSB officials have been instructed to gather personal data on convicts including their full name, home addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and even the IP addresses of devices used to access the Internet.
"Immediately collect and provide us with information about citizens of the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation, for their further involvement in the special operation on the territory of Ukraine, who are: a) conditionally convicted; b) sentenced to imprisonment for crimes of minor and medium gravity; c) sentenced to imprisonment for grave crimes; d) those convicted of especially grave crimes", the correspondence seen by Ukraine’s intelligence service says.
Chechen opposition claim this has two goals. First, to replenish the units that have suffered significant losses in combat in Ukraine. Second, to suppress any protest sentiment in Chechnya. Targeting the relatives of opposition activists is a widespread practice there.
"Now they are threatened with forcible dispatch to the most brutal fronts. In particular, the brother of the well-known Chechen opposition leader Khasan Khalitov has already been taken to one of the units on the front line. His other relatives have been kidnapped and their whereabouts are currently unknown", the Ukrainian intelligence officers say.
