Ceasefire should give Ukraine time to negotiate security guarantees — Ukrainian MP
Ukrainian MP Yehor Cherniev says that a ceasefire should allow Ukraine to develop security guarantees, but it is necessary to wait for Russia’s response to such a proposal
He stated this in the parliament, as reported by Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko.
“I think we need to wait for a response from Russia. I do not rule out that there may be additional conditions. However, we have seen the list of issues that the Ukrainian delegation agreed upon with the American side. This includes the exchange of prisoners of war and civilian detainees as a condition, among others, for the first step toward a ceasefire. If Russia sets conditions that are obviously impossible to fulfill, we will understand that it is either stalling for time or is not ready for peace negotiations,” the MP said.
Commenting on the outcome of the negotiations between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia, he noted that they demonstrated stabilization and improvement in relations with Ukraine’s strategic partner.
“The second aspect is that this is a step towards a ceasefire and, if I may say so, a full-scale peace. And the third aspect is concrete steps on how to implement it—through the exchange of prisoners of war, through an initial temporary ceasefire. If it is not violated, it could transition into a permanent one,” the MP added.
Cherniev emphasized that a ceasefire should give Ukraine time to develop security guarantees, which is the first issue and a key condition for establishing long-term peace. It would also allow for further steps that both sides need to take to make this peace sustainable.
When asked whether the parliament is involved in the negotiation process, the MP noted that, at present, “this is the president’s track and partially that of the Cabinet of Ministers.” He added, “MPs are working in their own direction together with U.S. congressmen, but this is more about providing general context.”
