Canada to buy NASAMS for Ukraine for over $300 million, and add missile arsenal
NASAMS air defence systems, which Canada will purchase from the United States and donate to Ukraine, will cost the state treasury 400 million Canadian dollars (about $307 million)
Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand stated this live on air of CBC TV channel, Ukrinform reports.
"We are happy to be able to transfer ground-based air defence systems to Ukraine after purchasing them from the US for approximately 400 million Canadian dollars," Anand said.
She noted that she is working on the fastest possible delivery of these weapons to Ukraine. "This is a priority for us, so we will ensure their delivery as soon as possible," the minister said.
According to Anand, along with NASAMS launchers, Canada will also send ammunition to them. "This means that delivery can take place in several stages, and we are currently coordinating all the details. But I am very determined to deliver aid to Ukraine as soon as possible," she emphasized.
Minister added that Canada will support Ukraine "in the short and long term".
"We consider all options to help Ukraine and support our commitment to allies, especially in NATO," she concluded.
