BNR reported that according to acting Bulgarian Prime Minister Galab Donev, this decision was dictated by the desire to protect the national producer.
“The main reason is that over the past year, contrary to the idea of the so-called solidarity corridors, significant volumes of food have remained in the country and disrupted the main production and trade chains. If this trend continues and even intensifies, which is quite possible after similar bans have been imposed by other countries, there could be extremely serious consequences for Bulgarian business,” Donev explained.
At the same time, he noted that Bulgaria expects the EU to hear and understand the positions of Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia on the import of Ukrainian food.
“Bulgaria remains in solidarity with Ukraine, but the bankruptcy of Bulgarian agricultural producers will not help its cause,” Donev said.
There is currently no information on how long the temporary ban will be in effect.
On April 15, Poland approved a ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and other food products to Poland. The government emphasized that this decision doesn't change the country's position on support and friendship with Ukraine.
After that, Warsaw decided to unblock the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products to European ports on April 21.
