Blow to Russia's morale and surveillance. Ukrainian military comments on recapture of Boyko's Towers
Natalia Humeniuk, a spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, said that the returned "Boyko towers" by the Ukrainian military not only hurt Russia's morale but also deprived it of its capabilities in the Black Sea
This was reported by Humeniuk in a telethon.
"Morally, this is a very powerful blow to them, because it emphasized that the Ukrainian Defense Forces can also advance by sea and come very dangerously close to the territories they occupied and still consider their own," Humeniuk said.
According to the military, another consequence was that the Russian invaders lost the facilities they used on these towers. They used to have reconnaissance and radar equipment to detect and collect data on the situation on the water surface.
"All this is now muted, their functioning has been stopped. That is, they left them without sound, without eyes. And this is another weakening of their positions. That is why we can now use these facilities for our needs, while they are deprived of them," the spokesperson added.
Facts about the Boyko Towers
"The Boyko Towers" are two drilling platforms that were purchased by Ukraine in 2011 for gas production on the Black Sea shelf. They were nicknamed after former Energy Minister Yuriy Boyko, who was suspected of corruption in their purchase. In 2014, the rigs were seized by Russia during the annexation of Crimea.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russia has used Boyko's rigs for military purposes. In particular, as helicopter landing sites and for the deployment of radar equipment.
In the summer of 2022, according to the occupying "head" of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck at the Chornomornaftogaz drilling rigs or so-called "Boyko Towers" seized by Russia. At the time, the Odesa Regional Military Administration's Serhiy Bratchuk reported that the Russians had turned the drilling platforms into military units, where they had deployed air defense and garrisons.
On August 27, British intelligence reported that Russia and Ukraine were fighting for Boyko's oil rigs in the Black Sea.
On September 11, the GUR reported that Ukraine had regained control of the Boyko rigs, which had been occupied since 2015.
The spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, said that the coastal missile and artillery troops of the Navy had been in control of the Boyko towers for over a year. Russian ships stopped approaching them after one of them was destroyed.
