At least four civilians injured, one killed as Russia targets multiple Ukrainian regions overnight
On the evening of Monday, August 18, the Russian army launched Shahed drones and cruise missiles at Ukraine. One person has been killed in Nizhyn, with casualties reported in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions
Kharkiv region
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Russian troops launched a massive combined attack on settlements in the Kharkiv region at night. This resulted in fires and civilian casualties.
Russian forces targeted the Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Lozova, and Kharkiv districts. In the village of Ruska Lozova in the Derhachi community, three people have been injured as a result of a strike by guided bombs.
In the village of Peremoha in the Lozova community, a fire broke out after a Russian drone hit the roof of a private house. Four people were injured, including children aged 3 and 8.
In addition, as a result of strikes by Russian guided bombs and FPV drones, agricultural equipment, private houses, farm buildings, and cars were burned. Summer cottages were damaged. Rescuers extinguished all fires.
Chernihiv region
The head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, Viacheslav Chaus, reported that drones attacked the Chernihiv region overnight.
“Unfortunately, infrastructure was damaged, and some settlements are facing power outages. Energy companies and rescue teams are already working on restoration,” he wrote.
Chaus later added that Nizhyn was hit by attack drones in the morning. “Unfortunately, a local civilian, a 45-year-old man, was killed,” he said.
Poltava region
The head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, Volodymyr Kohut, reported that Russian forces launched a massive attack on the Poltava region overnight. Hits and falling debris were recorded in Kremenchuk and Lubny districts, damaging administrative buildings of local energy companies.
In Lubny district, 1,471 households and 119 businesses were left without power. The State Emergency Service and energy companies are working to restore electricity.
Later, Kremenchuk Mayor Vitaliy Maletskyi said Russia carried out a large-scale attack on the city. “Dozens of explosions were heard, targeting energy and transport infrastructure. The Poltava Regional State Administration will report on the consequences,” he wrote.
Ihor Protsai, a member of the Poltava Regional Council, told Espreso TV that the attack caused “extensive fires.” He said Russian forces used a mix of ballistic missiles and numerous drones. “The mayor has shared pictures of the city, and residents are advised to stay indoors to avoid smoke,” he added. Nearly 1,500 people were left without power.
Protsai called it “one of the most serious attacks since the full-scale invasion,” noting the unprecedented number of drones and missiles directed at Lubny and Kremenchuk. Mayor Maletskyi later reported that unexploded cluster munitions were found in Kremenchuk.
The Ministry of Energy said that on the night of August 19, several dozen drones targeted a Ukrainian gas transportation facility in Poltava, causing preliminary damage to ground infrastructure. Experts are inspecting the site and assessing the full extent of the damage. The ministry noted that the last strikes on oil refining infrastructure were on June 15 and 21.
Since March 2025, Russia has carried out more than 2,900 attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, violating international humanitarian law. The Ministry of Energy called on the international community to strengthen sanctions against Russia and provide more support to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
Dnipropetrovsk region
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that Russian UAV strikes damaged an educational institution, but no casualties were reported.

“The hits caused a fire, which firefighters successfully extinguished,” the service said.

Ukraine’s FM says Russia’s night attacks do “the opposite of peace”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha commented on the attacks that killed civilians:
“While hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington, D.C., led by Presidents Zelenskyyand Trump, with the participation of European and NATO leaders, Moscow continued to do the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction,” he said.
The minister stressed the importance of stopping the killing, achieving sustainable peace, and providing reliable security guarantees. He added that the upcoming trilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia could pave the way for a breakthrough toward peace.
Sumy region
Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional State Administration, reported that at around 11:30 p.m., Russian troops struck a residential building in the Pishchanskyi district of the Sumy community with a drone.
