
Zelenskyy meets Canada’s Carney at G7, calls for tougher sanctions on Russia
On Tuesday, June 17, during the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney
The Office of the President of Ukraine reported the meeting.
Zelenskyy said they talked about support for Ukraine, tougher sanctions on Russia, using frozen Russian assets to help Ukrainians, funding for Ukrainian weapons production, and Canada’s role in rebuilding Ukraine.
They also discussed the latest Russian attack. Carney offered condolences on behalf of the Canadian people and said the attack shows why it’s important to keep supporting Ukraine.
Zelenskyy thanked Carney for the new military aid and for the strong support from Canadians.
“This is extremely important for our warriors – to stay strong on the battlefield, to endure until Russia is ready for peace talks. We are ready for peace talks and for an unconditional ceasefire. I believe that is crucial. But pressure is needed to make it happen,” the Ukrainain President stressed.
The leaders also talked about which sanctions would hurt Russia’s military industry and its ability to fund the war.
Zelenskyy and Carney agreed on next steps for working with NATO, the G7, and other allies. They also discussed working together at the UN on decisions about a full and unconditional ceasefire.
"Furthermore, President Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Carney focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, including the need for air defense systems and missiles, and deepening defense cooperation. They discussed potential joint weapons production projects and investments in Ukraine’s defense industry. The two leaders also discussed Canada’s involvement in developing Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction program," the presidential office added.
