Ukraine can hold its ground if U.S. gives minimum aid, Europe steps up — political scientist
Ukraine is now almost capable of holding its territories, provided that Europe significantly increases its support and the United States delivers the critical minimum of assistance, says political scientist Timothy Ash
Political scientist and journalist Timothy Ash made this statement in an interview on the Espreso TV channel.
"A new chapter in European and global history began on February 24, 2022, with the full-scale invasion. First came the shock of the invasion itself. Then followed the realization that major countries such as China, India, Turkey, Brazil, and South Africa were not on our side. Now, we are confronted with a third major shock — the 'Trump shock,' perhaps the most significant of all: the realization that Donald Trump likely feels closer to Vladimir Putin than to Volodymyr Zelenskyy," he said.
According to Ash, there is some good news.
"The good news is that I think Ukraine is now almost capable of holding the territories it controls, provided that there is a significant increase in support from Europe and that there is a critical minimum of assistance from the United States. This minimum includes three key things: intelligence, Patriot interceptor missiles, and 155-mm ammunition," the political analyst said.
Ash expressed the opinion that this is a significant support from the United States.
"As evidenced by the reaction of Europe — the visits of Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, Kier Starmer, Donald Tusk to Kyiv, the arrival of all foreign ministers to Lviv — there is a real political will to support Ukraine. We are indeed in an extremely difficult situation, due to a combination of factors related to Putin, Xi Jinping and Donald Trump. But I am convinced: Ukraine, together with Europe, is still able to withstand and cope with this threat," he concluded.
