Norway plans to boost Ukraine support amid growing defense concerns
Norway considers boosting military and civilian support for Ukraine, with 35 billion crowns allocated for 2025. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere proposed more aid, citing concerns over U.S. support
Reuters reported the information.
Last year, the Norwegian Parliament approved 35 billion Norwegian crowns ($3.22 billion) for Ukraine's military and civilian support in 2025, raising the total Nansen programme (Norway's cross-party, bilateral aid program for Ukraine) framework to 155 billion crowns from 2023 to 2030.
"I want to propose to the other parties in parliament that we meet this afternoon to discuss and agree on a significant increase in the Nansen programme for Ukraine this year. We will organise our expanded support so that it provides the greatest possible fighting power as quickly as possible," Stoere said, adding that the government also plans to strengthen Norway's own military.
“It marks the latest example of a European country scrambling to boost defence spending and maintain support for Ukraine after President Donald Trump froze U.S. military aid to Kyiv and fuelled doubts about its commitment to European NATO allies,” the outlet concluded.
- In the coming days, the Norwegian parliament will consider increasing military aid to Ukraine by €8.5 billion this year. If approved, Norway’s total assistance to Ukraine in 2025 will rise from €3 billion to €11.5 billion ($12 billion).
