Ukraine seeks more Patriot missiles from U.S. — FM Sybiha during meeting with German counterpart
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says that Ukraine has requested additional air defense systems from the United States. The government wants to acquire Patriot systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles
He said this during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Kyiv, according to LIGA.net.
"President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump with a proposal to purchase additional air defense systems—specifically Patriot systems, which can shoot down ballistic missiles," the diplomat said.
According to him, Ukraine aims to develop its own production of air defense systems and is counting heavily on support from its partners, particularly Germany.
"Another area where we need our partners' assistance is in increasing our capacity to manufacture our own air defense systems and to build up our air shield. This cooperation with our German friends will also be mutually beneficial," Sybiha said.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced his arrival in Ukraine on his social media page on X.
“Good evening from the train traveling to Kyiv. It's a long train ride to a country that has once again been struck by the scourge of war,” Wadephul said in a video.
He noted that he was already in Ukraine and, by the time viewers saw the video, he would already be in Kyiv.
Upon arriving in Kyiv, Wadephul strongly condemned the actions of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, DW reports.
“Putin seeks to forcibly prevent Ukraine from determining its own fate. His war aims at nothing less than the subjugation of Ukraine. He attacks Ukrainians with brutal bombing terror. Every day and night, people die in their own homes, in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro. But despite all the destruction and terror, Ukrainians daily and repeatedly resolutely defend their country, their freedom, and their future. They demonstrate incredible courage, strength, and endurance. This deserves our highest respect,” he emphasized.
Wadephul confirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stressing the importance of this assistance for European stability.
“We will continue to firmly stand by Ukraine so that it can successfully defend itself, with the help of a modern air defense system and other weapons, as well as humanitarian and economic aid. I have come to Kyiv today with this commitment,” the diplomat added.
The head of the German Foreign Ministry expressed confidence in Ukraine’s serious intentions to end the war through negotiations but noted that Putin shows no willingness for constructive dialogue, seeking only capitulation.
“And as long as this is the case, we will continue to restrict Putin’s ability to finance this criminal war through sanctions. We are working intensively on this within the European Union and together with our Group of Seven (G7) partners,” he added.
- Johann Wadephul has already visited Ukraine since his appointment. He made his first official visit to Lviv on May 8–9, 2025.
