Germany financing Starlink alternative for Ukraine
Germany is funding Ukraine's access to the satellite internet network operated by the French company Eutelsat, providing an alternative to Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink
Reuters reported the information, citing Eutelsat chief executive Eva Berneke.
She mentioned that Eutelsat has been offering Ukraine high-speed satellite internet services through a German distributor for approximately a year, with Berlin providing the funding. However, Berneke declined to disclose the cost of the financing.
"Now we're looking to get between 5,000 and 10,000 there relatively fast," the chief executive said, noting that this could happen "within weeks."
Meanwhile, Eutelsat spokesperson Joanna Darlington commented on the potential for German funding for additional terminals, stating that the matter is currently under discussion.
"We don’t know yet how the EU collectively or country by country will fund efforts going forward," Darlington said.
- On April 3, Ukraine received another 5,000 Starlink terminals from Poland to ensure uninterrupted communication in hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure facilities.
