European Council extends military training mission for Ukraine by two years
On November 8, the European Council decided to extend the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) until November 15, 2026
The decision was announced on the European Council's website, which also confirmed the allocation of 409 million euros for the period from November 14, 2024, to November 15, 2026.
According to the press release, EUMAM Ukraine remains a key tool for EU’s military support to Ukraine, with its core objective of contributing to enhancing the military capacity of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
The European Council noted that on October 17, 2022, it decided to establish EUMAM Ukraine for an initial two-year period. The mission’s goal was to help strengthen Ukraine’s military to defend its territorial integrity and protect civilians from Russia’s aggression.
So far, EUMAM Ukraine has trained 63,000 Ukrainian soldiers, equivalent to ten brigades. In the coming months, another 15,000 soldiers will be trained, bringing the total to 75,000 by the end of winter 2024/2025.
EUMAM is financed from the European Peace Facility.
- On June 21, it was reported that more than 52,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained under the EU mission EUMAM since 2022, which is three times higher than expected.
