AFU shell 4 Russian depots, 2 air defense systems, 1 command post – General Staff

The Ukrainian Armed Forces' General Staff reported this on May 17. 

Over the past day, Ukrainian aviation launched 14 strikes on the invading Russian forces' military positions, including 5 on Russian anti-aircraft missile systems.

The missile forces and artillery hit 1 Russian command center, 6 manpower concentration areas, 2 munitions depots, 2 fuel and lubrication depots, 1 artillery unit at a firing position, 2 air defense facilities, as well as 2 other important enemy targets.

Ukrainian air defense also destroyed 2 Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAVs.

Frontline situation

“During the day, the enemy launched 5 missile attacks on the cities of Bakhmut and Kherson using S-300 air defense systems. In addition, invading Russian forces launched 32 airstrikes and over 40 attacks with multiple launch rocket systems at the Ukrainian troops' positions and populated areas. Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded among the civilian population, private houses, other civilian and administrative infrastructure were damaged,” the General Staff reported. 

Invading Russian forces are attacking in the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka directions. 

Over the last day, the enemy forces launched 25 assaults in the above-mentioned areas, with Bakhmut and Marinka remaining in the epicenter of hostilities.

Near the state Ukrainian borders with Russia and Belarus, the situation hasn't changed significantly, and no enemy offensive groups have been detected. 

At the same time, the Russian Federation continued shelling the entire border line: one settlement in the Chernihiv region, 3 more in the Sumy region, as well as 11 towns and villages in the Kharkiv region were attacked. 

Russian attacks in other Ukrainian regions

• In the Kupiansk direction, 9 settlements in the Kharkiv and Luhansk regions came under artillery shelling. 

• In the Lyman direction, 7 settlements in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions came under Russian fire. 

• In the Bakhmut direction, fighting continues for the fortress city. 13 localities in the Donetsk region were attacked by the invading Russian troops. 

• In the Avdiivka directions, 8 settlements of the Donetsk region were attacked by the Russian army. 

• In the Marinka direction, 4 settlements of the Donetsk region came under enemy fire. 

• In the Shakhtarsk direction, 4 localities of the Donetsk region came under fire.

• In the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, over 20 towns and villages were subjected to numerous attacks by the Russian army. 

On Wednesday, May 17, a child died as a result of Russian shelling in the Kherson region.
