The White House has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should attend the Group of 20 summit in Bali if Vladimir Putin is present

This is reported by Bloomberg.

"As President Biden himself has publicly stated, he does not believe that President Putin should be present at the G20 because he is waging his war against Ukraine", the White House National Security Council said in a statement. But if Putin does come, the US believes that Zelenskyy should also participate.

On August 18, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he expected Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend a summit in November.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US and its allies have pushed for tough sanctions against Putin, but countries such as Indonesia and India have rejected the idea.

Ukraine is leaning toward Zelenskyy "participating" in the summit, leaving open the possibility that he could join virtually, rather than in person. This happened in July, when the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, spoke at a remote meeting of the G20 foreign ministers.

Biden has not said whether he will travel to Bali to attend the conference, although US officials have taken part in meetings ahead of the leaders' summit. Biden and Xi also asked their aides to schedule a one-on-one meeting, which would be their first face-to-face meeting since Biden became president.

In March, Biden said he believed Russia should be expelled from the G20 over its invasion of Ukraine, but acknowledged that other members of the group, including Indonesia, might disagree. White House officials said they had privately conveyed to Indonesia their wish for Russia not to be present.

  •           The UK Foreign Ministry opposed Russia's participation in the G20 summit because of its aggression in Ukraine. The candidate for the post of the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, also emphasized that Putin should be banned from the G20 summit.
