Zelenskyy meets with IAEA head before Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant visit
On August 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi
This was reported by CNN with reference to the press service of Zelenskyy's office.
The meeting took place ahead of a planned visit to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by a delegation from the IAEA, the UN's nuclear watchdog, later this week.
Zelenskyy told Grossi that the IAEA's mission to Ukraine was "urgent" and that Ukraine wanted its team to do more than inspect the station.
Zelenskyy said that he hopes that the delegation "will find an opportunity thanks to our special services, thanks to the security corridors to get to the station, and will do everything possible to avoid all these threats on a global scale".
"Probably, today this is one of the most priority security issues for Ukraine and the world", Zelenskyy said.
He accused the Russian military of "creating great risks, regarding explosions, regarding the failure of nuclear reactors, regarding the risks of disconnecting the units of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant from our grid, and regarding the risks of the heating season for our citizens".
Zelenskyy called on the IAEA to do more than inspect the station, saying that strategic decisions were needed "regarding the urgent demilitarization of the station and the withdrawal of all military personnel of the Russian Federation with explosives, with any weapons".
Zelenskyy insisted that this territory should become a demilitarized zone and that the station should be transferred under the full control of the Ukrainian state.
