Zelensky responds to petition on registered partnerships for same-sex couples

Ukraine has chosen to move towards European standards, which are based on human rights, among other things. Therefore, the government is working to legalise civil partnerships.

This is stated in the response of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to a petition regarding registered partnerships for same-sex couples.

According to him, the protection of fundamental human rights is the main duty of the state.

"The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine is currently working on a comprehensive legislative introduction of the civil partnership institute, defining the legal framework, procedure and consequences of its state registration, as well as the legal status and personal non-property and property rights and obligations of partners, taking into account the peculiarities of existing legal institutions," Zelenskyy said.

He also reminded that the only legislative body in Ukraine is the Parliament.

"I appealed to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a request to consider the issue raised in the electronic petition. Given that, in accordance with Article 116 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine takes measures to ensure human and civil rights and freedoms, I sent a similar letter to the Prime Minister of Ukraine. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine will inform the author of the electronic petition about the results of consideration of the issues raised," Zelenskyy summarised.

Last summer, Zelenskyy responded to a petition to legalize same-sex marriage.
