The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared the news in an interview with journalists during the national telethon.
A large number of pilots, who were carrying supplies by helicopter to the Ukrainian military blocked in Azovstal and were picking up the wounded, were killed.
"Absolutely heroic people who knew that it was difficult to fly to Azovstal, it was almost impossible to bring weapons, medicine, food, water, pick up the wounded, but it all happened. A lot of things happened that no one could officially comment on. There weren't any air corridors to Azovstal because of the powerful Russian air defense.
Helicopter pilots flew there for many weeks, knowing that 90% of them wouldn't return," Zelensky said.
