Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant operates with risk of violating radiation, fire safety standards - Energoatom
As of the morning of August 8, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) has been operating with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety regulations, according to the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom.
This was reported by Energoatom.
The periodic shelling of the ZNPP by Russian troops with anti-aircraft missiles over the past few days has caused a serious risk to the safe operation of the plant.
"As a result of the attack on the Zaporizhzhia NPP, one of the power units triggered an emergency protection, one of the three working power units was disconnected. As a result of the shelling, the nitrogen-oxygen station and the combined auxiliary building were seriously damaged. There are still risks of hydrogen leakage and radioactive substance sputtering, and there is also a high fire hazard. Also, three radiation monitoring sensors around the SSVYAP ZNPP site were damaged," the agency writes.
The Ukrainian staff of the station continues to work and make every effort to ensure nuclear and radiation safety, as well as eliminate the consequences of damage.
"The nuclear power plant is still occupied and controlled by the Russian military. Considering that the actions of the invaders cannot be predicted, the threat to the physical safety of the plant remains. Currently, the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to operate and produce electricity for the needs of the energy system of Ukraine. Ukraine calls on the international community to urgently take measures to force Russia to release ZNPP and transfer the power plant to the control of Ukraine for the sake of the security of the whole world," Energoatom emphasizes.
