The Wall Street Journal reports that Xi plans to speak with Zelenskyy for the first time in more than a year, likely after he visits Moscow next week to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
The meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy reflects Beijing's efforts to play a more active role in mediating an end to Russia's war against Ukraine.
The publication emphasizes that a direct conversation with Mr. Zelenskyy, if it were to take place, would mark a significant step in Beijing's efforts to play peacemaker in Ukraine, which have so far been met with skepticism in Europe. It would also reinforce Beijing's credentials as a global energy broker after facilitating a surprise diplomatic breakthrough between Saudi Arabia and Iran last week.
China is interested in ending the war because it has put the country in a dangerous situation, forcing Xi to balance China's partnership with Russia with his own close relationship with Putin, as well as growing distrust with the United States and its allies.
Xi is likely to talk to Zelenskyy virtually.
In addition, the Chinese leader is considering visiting other European countries, although his full itinerary has not yet been confirmed.
On February 22, Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Wang Yi, a member of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, said that he expects a new impetus in relations between Moscow and Beijing.
It also became known that Chinese leader Xi Jinping plans to visit Moscow next week and meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
