BBC reported the news.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the embassy’s closure, calling the decision “regrettable.”

“Despite our differences, Norway wishes to keep the dialogue with Venezuela open,” a ministry spokesperson said, emphasizing that the Nobel Peace Prize “is independent of the Norwegian government.”

Machado received the prize for her “tireless efforts to advance the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people.”
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the laureate a “demonic witch.” Machado has campaigned against Maduro for years and spent much of last year in hiding.

Who is María Corina Machado

María Corina Machado is a Venezuelan opposition politician, co-founder of the political movement Sumate and a former member of the National Assembly.

She is one of the most prominent critics of Nicolás Maduro’s regime, advocating for democracy, human rights, and market reforms. Due to government persecution, she was forced into hiding. In 2025, Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the democratic rights of Venezuelans.
