U.S.-EU deal ruins Putin’s plan to buy off Trump

While we were busy diagnosing small ungulates, something big happened in Europe

A deal was signed between the EU and Trump. I say Trump, not the U.S., because this isn’t a typical state-level agreement. It’s more like the EU handing Trump a personal gift. That’s why the public figures include $600 billion in European investments going to the U.S. during... Trump’s presidency.

But if we put the narcissistic old man aside, the outcome for Ukraine is great.

"The key point: this deal kills Russia’s plan to bribe Trump. Putin had offered the U.S. president a cut from selling Russian oil and gas to Europe. Trump loved the idea and pushed hard for it. But the Russians turned out to be so toxic that even Trump backed off."

Now Trump has made Europe promise to buy $750 billion worth of American energy. Simply put, that’s a full-on replacement of Russian energy in Europe. And it’s not temporary or random, it’s written into the EU’s commitments to Trump.

Switching suppliers also means changing infrastructure, which takes years to build. Even if sanctions on Russia disappeared tomorrow, restoring supply routes would take years, and Russia still would never recover the share of the European energy market it had before the invasion into Ukraine.

Putin has “outplayed” everyone again.
