Trump questions Hungary's opposition to Ukraine EU membership in Orbán call
U.S. President Donald Trump called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after negotiations with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on August 18
Bloomberg reported the information, citing a source.
According to the agency’s sources, during the White House meeting with Trump, European leaders asked him to use his influence on Orbán because Budapest was blocking Ukraine’s entry into the European Union.
It is noted that after this, the U.S. president called the Hungarian prime minister to ask why Hungary was blocking Kyiv’s EU membership. Later, Orban wrote on Facebook that he had received such a request.
"Ukraine’s membership in the European Union does not provide any security guarantees. Therefore linking membership with security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous," he wrote.
In addition, the Hungarian prime minister showed interest in holding talks with Trump between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and dictator Vladimir Putin.
- Earlier, Viktor Orbán said Ukraine was allegedly carrying out forced mobilization, which, according to him, is causing the deaths of citizens, including ethnic Hungarians. In this context, he called on the European Union to take action.
