Truce announced by Putin is not enough – Italian Prime Minister
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes that Vladimir Putin’s three-day truce is not enough. She insists on a fair and lasting peace
Meloni made the statement in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
According to Meloni, Italy supports the peace efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump and sees Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement about his readiness for an unconditional ceasefire as a clear sign of Ukraine’s sincere desire for peace. She stressed the importance of reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.
“Now, Russia must show the same. A three-day truce announced by Putin for Victory Day is a different story and clearly not enough. Peace must be fair and long-term,” said the Prime Minister.
Meloni underlined that what’s needed most are clear and reliable security guarantees.
"Italy has long since made its proposal: a solution inspired by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty is needed, even outside the NATO Treaty," she reminded.
- Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire for May 9, when Russia marks Victory Day with military parades.
