Taiwan's international recognition will bring peace to Indo-Pacific - Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung urges the U.N. to resist China’s aggression and include Taiwan, stressing its importance to global trade and stability
The Diplomat reports.
Taiwan is crucial to global supply chains, producing over 90% of the world’s advanced semiconductors and many AI-driven chips. Additionally, the Taiwan Strait is a vital route, handling half of the world's maritime trade.
Foreign Affairs Minister Lin Chia-Lung warns that China continues to escalate aggression toward Taiwan, threatening the stability of the Indo-Pacific and global security. Beijing’s attempts to alter the status quo and expand authoritarianism pose a serious threat to peace.
Global leaders have recognized the need to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait, but the U.N. has yet to address China’s challenges or include Taiwan in its system. The minister believes the idea that countries must choose between China and Taiwan is a false dichotomy and urges the U.N. to rethink Taiwan’s exclusion.
He stresses that the U.N. must resist Beijing's pressure and stop distorting General Assembly Resolution 2758, which does not pertain to Taiwan. Beijing’s misrepresentation of this resolution limits Taiwan's participation and supports its claims for a potential invasion. "Yet, contrary to Beijing’s false claims, Resolution 2758 merely addresses the issue of China’s representation in the United Nations. It does not mention Taiwan. It neither states that Taiwan is part of the PRC nor ascribes to Beijing any right to represent Taiwan in the UN system. In other words, the resolution has nothing to do with Taiwan," minister Lin Chia-Lung admit.
He claims, Beijing’s expansionism will not stop at Taiwan. Beijing aims to assert control over international waters and challenge global norms and claims. To ensure global peace and economic stability, the U.N. and the international community must not only reaffirm their concerns about Beijing’s behavior but also work together to prevent its unlawful schemes.
Fortunately, Lin Chia-Lung notes growing international pushback, such as from U.S. officials and the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China. He believes Taiwan’s inclusion in the U.N. system would help maintain peace and promote global prosperity. "The upcoming 79th U.N. General Assembly and its Summit of the Future present a timely opportunity to address key security concerns while advancing the broader goals of global sustainable development and building a more resilient global community for current and future generations," Lin Chia-Lung convinced.
