Romanian parliament concerned about possible Russian interference in elections
The head of the Romanian parliament’s committee on oversight of special services, Alexandru Muraru, sees “concrete risks” of Russian interference in elections in Romania and other European countries
He was quoted by Digi24.
Muraru, who chairs the parliament’s committee on oversight of special services, said he sees “concrete risks” of Russian interference in elections in Romania and other European countries.
He noted that during the committee’s discussions over the past month, the risks posed by Russia’s hostile actions against Western countries were a key topic.
Among other things, the committee focused on risks and threats to Romania linked to potential Russian interference — analyzing Moldova’s election experience, Russian attempts to influence elections across Europe, including the European Parliament elections and Romania’s presidential elections, and other hostile activities by Russia targeting Romania, Moldova, and the West.
The committee emphasized that active monitoring of this situation and potential external risks remains an absolute priority.
- In December 2024, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential elections, citing evidence of Russian interference.
