Poland will not send its soldiers to Ukraine, but will support other states – Tusk
Poland does not plan to send soldiers to Ukraine but will back other states that wish to do so
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this before heading to an emergency summit of European leaders in Paris, reports RMF24.
"Poland is committed to cooperating on security, the situation in Ukraine, and the Russian-Ukrainian war, with the European Union, European allies like the UK and Norway, and, of course, the United States," he stated.
At the same time, the head of the Polish government emphasized that Warsaw has no plans to send soldiers to Ukraine.
"But we will support countries that may want to offer such guarantees," Tusk added.
The Prime Minister assured that Poland's support for Kyiv will continue "organizationally, within our capabilities: financially, humanitarianly, and with military assistance."
"We can and must play a positive role. By a positive role, I mean the closest cooperation between Poland and Ukraine on issues of war and peace, along with the European Union, the US, and European countries like the UK and Norway," he stressed.
Peacekeeping troops in Ukraine: What we know
At the end of January, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed to secure Ukraine after hostilities end. Later, the president clarified that the peacekeeping forces should include US military personnel.
On February 11, the NYT reported that there are no 200,000 peacekeepers in Europe who could be sent to Ukraine. This is almost three times the size of the entire British army. On the same day, Zelenskyy said the mission could be operational with 100,000-150,000 European troops deployed.
According to the AP, a group of European countries is secretly working on a plan to send troops to Ukraine. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov previously confirmed that partners are already developing the idea of a peacekeeping mission.
On February 17, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced he was ready to deploy peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.
On the same day, the Swedish Foreign Minister said the country does not rule out sending troops to Ukraine as part of a post-war peacekeeping mission.
