It’s difficult to be vassal of China

The remarkable visit of almost the entire Russian government to Beijing to bow to the suzerainty went without the expected breakthroughs.

The previously known theses were confirmed, assurances of "peace-friendship-festival" were made, and that seems to be all.

“In particular, Putin failed to secure the signing of a contract for additional supplies of Russian gas and the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline.”

Back in the spring of 2023, Putin proposed that China increase its gas purchases to 100 billion cubic meters per year, and claimed that the new pipe project was “highly ready.”

Putin returned empty-handed from the trip. Xi Jinping did not mention Russian gas in his statement following the talks.

The joint declaration "on deepening comprehensive partnership relations" only states that Russia and China are ready to "develop cooperation" in the field of "natural gas" and emphasizes that it should be carried out "on a market basis." That is, with discounts and on Chinese terms.

It's hard to be a vassal of China.
