EU realizes that if Trump is elected, Brussels will have to deal with security issues itself - journalist

The EU is considering its own defense if Donald Trump becomes new US president

Ana Daukševič, a Lithuanian journalist who works for the European institutions in Brussels, voiced this opinion on the Espreso TV channel.

"Not only in the Baltic States is there concern that Donald Trump may become President of the United States. The European Parliament, the Commission, and the Council of Europe are talking about this. The EU has always placed its hopes on NATO as an Alliance and America. If Trump becomes president, everything will change," she said.

Today, there are initiatives to create a commissioner who will be responsible for EU defense, the journalist noted.

"In Brussels, they say that Europe should have its own army, weapons, and joint procurement. It should be understood that the NATO Alliance as such does not have a budget for such purchases, border preparation, etc. The European Union has the money to finance and create joint arms procurement," Daukševič added.

According to her, representatives of many countries have an understanding that if Trump becomes president, he will do what he said. They say that America will be looking more at China and the border with Mexico, while Europe should think about its own security.
