Freeland underscored that the United States has been "unable to step up" on aid for Ukraine, a country currently engaged in combat.
According to her, Canadians can take pride in their nation's efforts, as Canada "is absolutely doing our part to resist Russia" by supporting Ukraine in "NATO's biggest fight."
"In March, Canada sent $2 billion in urgent budget financing support to Ukraine at a time when the U.S. — and this is maybe something you could ask the U.S. ambassador about — at a time when the U.S. has been unable to step up and provide support for Ukraine. We were there to fill the gap," emphasized the Canadian minister.
Freeland did not specify whether Canada plans to increase its federal budget on April 16 to meet NATO's military spending target of 2% of GDP for member countries. However, she highlighted that Canada's per capita commitments to Ukraine, referred to as NATO's most pressing challenge, were highly significant.
