Will NATO repeat the fate of UN and OSCE?
"News" that we deserve (apparently, we didn't pray enough): Trump says Ukraine needs to forget about NATO, as it is the reason the war started
Now, the facts.
In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and began its invasion of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, there was no Biden, only Obama. He didn’t promise Ukraine NATO. I would say, quite the opposite. The level of support among Ukrainians for Ukraine's NATO membership barely exceeded 30%.
Despite this, the invasion happened. And at that time, Ukraine was essentially "neutral."
So, of course, it’s a great thing when you use the method of "I remember this, but I don't remember that," but not everyone has lost their memory yet.
And, frankly, this statement by Trump is very weak for a leader of the free world. Because a strong leader should have strong preparation, not quotes from Russian forums.
So, to summarize: it may happen that with the current position of the official Washington, in the short term, NATO will become as amorphous an organization as the UN or the OSCE. Therefore, understanding these trends, Ukraine needs to start talking with European partners now about creating a European Defense Force. Otherwise, they will soon hear the same words about themselves that Trump says about Ukraine.
At this stage, the NATO alliance is heading into a major political crisis. And we will feel this in the coming months, during Trump’s more substantial negotiations with Putin.
