
U.S. Secretary of State holds phone call with Russian FM at Russia’s request
On the evening of June 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ahead of the talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on June 2
The Russian Foreign Ministry was the first to report on the officials’ conversation.
The ministry noted that Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio discussed the war in Ukraine during their phone conversation, including the talks in Istanbul on June 2.
According to the Russian ministry, the U.S. Secretary of State allegedly "expressed condolences over the victims of railway infrastructure explosions in the Bryansk and Kursk regions."
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed the conversation between the two officials.
"Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, at Russia’s request. Secretary Rubio reiterated President Trump’s call for continued direct talks between Russia and Ukraine to achieve a lasting peace," she said.
- The last time the Russian Foreign Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State spoke by phone was on May 28, 2025. They discussed preparations for a new round of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
