U.S. government halts funding for English translations of Ukrainian literature
The U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities has ended its funding of the publishing program at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University
The program director and literary scholar, Oleh Kotsiuba, announced this on Facebook.
The National Endowment for the Humanities terminated the grant that supported the publication of Ukrainian literature in English translation.
“This was the first such federal grant we received for our publications in over 40 years,” Kotsiuba wrote.
According to the program director, the letter they received stated that the Endowment “has reasonable grounds to discontinue the subsidy in view of the NEH redirecting its funding toward a new direction aligned with the president’s future agenda.”
“Since the launch of the series 3.5 years ago, we have managed to publish 14 volumes of outstanding Ukrainian literature in translation. We will continue doing all we can, considering the resources we have. But after three years of Russia’s war, it will be much more difficult, as the entire publishing team consists of just me and one editor. We had hoped to hire another part-time editor to help with the workload, but that is no longer possible,” Kotsiuba emphasized.
