U.S. aims for Ukraine ceasefire within weeks
American officials told their European counterparts at a meeting in Paris that they want to secure a complete ceasefire in Ukraine within a few weeks, as part of new efforts aimed at ending the fighting in Russia’s three-year war
Bloomberg reported the information, citing sources familiar with the matter.
On Thursday, discussions, including a meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, with Ukrainian officials present, primarily focused on how to quickly move toward a ceasefire and establish lasting peace, according to anonymous sources.
The participants told U.S. officials that they fully support President Donald Trump's main goal of ending the war as soon as possible.
U.S. officials stated that they expect significant progress soon, and participants in Thursday's meeting agreed to work in that direction, sources said.
European officials also wanted to know what actions the Trump administration would take if there’s no progress from Putin, urging Washington to toughen its stance on Moscow, including through a potential "comprehensive" sanctions package.
- On April 17, Ukraine's Andriy Yermak, Andrii Sybiha, and Rustem Umerov arrived in Paris for talks on ceasefire and security guarantees with UK, German, and French officials. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Representative Steve Witkoff also attended.
