Speaking at the international conference Baltic Defence 2025 in Vilnius, Kubilius noted that battle-hardened Ukrainian soldiers could play a key role in strengthening the collective defense of NATO's northeastern flank after peace is established.

"It would be good if the battle-tested Ukrainian army, after peace is established in Ukraine, is ready to be present in all countries of our border region, starting with the Baltic region, and in Lithuania, alongside the German brigade and rotational American battalions," he said.

Kubilius also warned that today the Russian army is stronger than it was in February 2022, when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"We will face a Russian army capable of controlling four to five million drones per year. No army in the European Union has such experience," he said.

  • European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius has warned that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin could order an attack on a NATO member state within the next 2-4 years, with the Baltic countries being one of Russia's most likely targets.
