Ukraine offers biomethane as green alternative to Russian gas — Deputy Energy Minister
Biomethane has the potential to play a key role in Europe’s new energy security system, particularly as a replacement for Russian gas
According to Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Mykola Kolisnyk, “Europe and Ukraine are at a turning point in redefining their energy security strategies. Some European countries still rely on imports of Russian gas. Biogas, as part of the green transformation, is now an essential element of the continent’s energy security. It offers a path to replacing Russian gas with biomolecules — green molecules,” Kolisnyk said.
He emphasized that Ukraine, with its significant biomethane potential, can support Europe in achieving its climate and energy goals under the Fit for 55 and RePowerEU initiatives.
The official recalled that in February 2025, Ukraine exported biomethane to the EU via the gas transmission system for the first time. This milestone was made possible by the creation of a dedicated legislative framework, the coordination of technical procedures, and the start of integration with European energy systems.
Kolisnyk highlighted the importance of technology exchange with the EU and the need for financial support to develop the biomethane market. He also expressed gratitude to international partners and domestic producers for their contributions to advancing the industry.
