“Trump’s policy pressured victim, Ukraine,” says ex-U.S. ambassador explaining resignation
Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink said she resigned because of the foreign policy under President Donald Trump’s administration
She revealed her reasoning in a column for the Detroit Free Press.
Brink said that her role as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine was "the toughest job of her life."
"I respect the president’s right and responsibility to determine U.S. foreign policy ― with proper checks and balances by U.S. Congress. It is the role of America’s Foreign Service to execute that policy. Unfortunately, the policy since the beginning of the Trump administration has been to put pressure on the victim, Ukraine, rather than on the aggressor, Russia," she wrote.
The former ambassador emphasized that she "could no longer in good faith" carry out the Trump administration's policies and felt it was her duty to resign.
"I cannot stand by while a country is invaded, a democracy bombarded, and children killed with impunity. I believe that the only way to secure U.S. interests is to stand up for democracies and to stand against autocrats. Peace at any price is not peace at all ― it is appeasement. And history has taught us time and again that appeasement does not lead to safety, security or prosperity. It leads to more war and suffering," Brink summarized.
- On April 10, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink announced she was resigning early. At the time, the Financial Times reported she quit due to growing political differences with President Trump’s administration.
- On May 1, the U.S. State Department appointed Julie Davis as acting Chargé d'Affaires to Ukraine, and she took over the embassy on May 5.
