Trump's policy boosts support for Ukraine among Americans - analyst Umland
Analyst at the Stockholm Center for Eastern European Studies Andreas Umland revealed that support for Ukraine among Americans has increased amid Washington's pressure on Kyiv regarding negotiations with Russia
He shared the information on Espreso TV.
"We are now witnessing events that have already occurred in other wars. Essentially, this can be called the 'theater of negotiations.' It's communication that leads nowhere and creates the impression among many, unfortunately, Western politicians, that something can be negotiated with Russia. They believe that Russia is supposedly open to dialogue and that Ukraine is unwilling to negotiate, along with some Western politicians. Unfortunately, this works," explained Umland.
According to the analyst, American society is starting to realize that trusting Putin is not an option. Specifically, Americans, amidst Washington's pressure on Kyiv, have started to support Ukraine more than they did at the beginning of the year.
"We can only hope for the American response to the policy of the new president's administration. I hope that people in the U.S. will see the real situation and begin to criticize President Trump's actions. By the way, I saw the latest polls in the U.S. Americans are reacting. In particular, Washington's pressure on Kyiv has increased support for Ukraine more than at the beginning of the year. In other words, Americans are beginning to understand that Putin cannot be trusted," he added.
Trump-Putin call
On March 18, U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin that lasted about two hours. According to both parties, they agreed on a limited stop in attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Moscow also demanded a suspension of mobilization in Ukraine and the rearmament of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during a potential ceasefire.
After the talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Kremlin leader had effectively rejected the proposal for a complete ceasefire.
On Sunday, March 23, representatives of the U.S. and Russia will hold negotiations in Saudi Arabia regarding the details of halting strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
