Discussion on Ukraine

Donald Trump said he and Xi “talked about Ukraine for a long time.”

“We will work together to get something done. We agreed that both sides are locked in fighting and sometimes you have to let them fight, crazy. Xi will help us about Ukraine but there is not a lot more we can do,” the U.S. president stated.

More on the talks

The meeting took place at Gimhae Air Base in the city of Busan. The leaders arrived for a bilateral meeting accompanied by delegations of senior advisers, with both sides seated across from each other at a long table.

Among the U.S. officials joining Trump were Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

As CNN noted, the U.S. president generously praised his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

It’s a great honor to be with a friend of mine, really, for a long time now,” Trump said, sitting across the table from Xi.

He called Xi “a very distinguished and respected president” as well as “a great leader of a great country.”

Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in turn, praised the peacekeeping efforts of the U.S. president, although he noted that Beijing and Washington do not always “see eye to eye.”

Given our different national conditions, we do not always see eye to eye with each other, and it is normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then,” Xi said ahead of his meeting with Trump in South Korea.

Despite the differences, he said, both leaders must "stay the right course and ensure the steady sailing forward of the giant ship of China-US relations."

I always believe that China’s development goes hand in hand with your vision to make America great again,” Xi added.

He also praised Trump’s "great contribution to the recent conclusion of the Gaza ceasefire agreement" and his role in signing a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.

At the conclusion of the talks, the leaders shook hands before leaving Gimhae Air Base together. After the meeting, Trump boarded Air Force One, ending his tour of Asia.
